Students agitating for quota reform are clashing with the police in Malchatwar area of Dhaka University.
The clash started after 4:30 pm on Wednesday (July 17).
It is reported that the agitating students have taken position in front of Masterda Surya Sen Hall. And a large number of police have been stationed near the residence of the Vice-Chancellor. From there, students are throwing bricks in response to police sound grenades and tear gas.
Earlier in the afternoon, after failing to perform the funeral prayer at TSC, this funeral prayer was held at the VC premises with the participation of more than two thousand students. After the funeral, the students started the procession with the coffin in the campus. After that, when Raju started going to the sculpture with a procession, the police dispersed the students by throwing sound grenades and tear gas shells. In no time they gathered again in front of Surya Sen hall.
In this regard, Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, said, “They started the procession peacefully after the Ghaybana Janaza.” The police attacked there.
In this regard, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Sudeep Kumar Chakraborty said, “For the sake of the security of the VC’s residence and surroundings, the procession was dispersed with the permission of the VC.”
Incidentally, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said about the quota reform movement at the press conference organized on her visit to China, ‘Why is there so much anger about the liberation war? The freedom fighter’s grandsons will get nothing, so will the Razakar’s grandsons get everything?’ The students of Dhaka University started protesting from Sunday night, complaining that the quota reform activists were called ‘Rajakar’s children or grandsons’. Then the movement spread across the capital. When the movement spread across the country on Tuesday, 6 people lost their lives. The protestors also held a program on Wednesday to protest against the brutal attack by the police and Chhatra League on the protestors demanding quota reform across the country.
